The Fluidity of Time: Analyzing Salvador Dalí
6 pages·MLA 9·Due 9:00 am

In his 1931 oil painting, Salvador Dalí renders time as something soft — melting, draping, no longer insisting on its own measurement. The image is so disarming because we have never seen a clock misbehave, and the fact that Dalí can make it do so with pigment alone is a quiet argument about how much of time is psychological rather than physical.

The painting emerges out of surrealism's interest in the unconscious, and yet Dalí's clocks are not chaotic — they sag with an almost resigned grace, as if exhausted by the expectation of keeping order.

This essay argues that The Persistence of Memory is less a painting about dreams than a painting about attention, and that the melting clocks function as evidence for the phenomenological elasticity of lived time
